The most important, and often overlooked, aspect of golfing is putting.  It can turn missed shots with irons and drivers into an afterthought with a great par saving up-and-in.  By practicing on a golf putting green early and often, and keeping your regular swing in check with a golf alignment mat, a golf mat, and some limited flight balls, your game likely will improve.

Even Tiger Woods had struggles on the putting green.  Some shots were missed with irons, but Tiger often put himself in a position to make a par-saving putt, or a birdie try.  Practice is the only way this can be fixed, but, of course, in some instances there is no controlling what may happen.

During a round, there are times when a poor tee shot or a missed iron shot will lead to a need to recover.  By becoming a mainstay on the golf putting green, or on the golf mats at a driving range, a consistent swing will be had and it will become easier not to compound errors.

By taking this approach and realizing that it is more important not to compound mistakes than to try not to make an incredible shot after a miscue, it will be easier to practice for any type of situation.  Using golf alignment mats and working on draws and fades with limited flight balls is a great way to practice for this.

Why the switch to Hybrid Clubs?

What’s-up with the new hybrid clubs? Everybody is talking about them.

Are they really the game saver that all the hype seems to say?

The fact is, clubs like hybrid type clubs have been around a long time. They used to go by names like “baffler” and “rescue clubs” or just plain utility woods. So are they really something new? Well, yes and no.

The hybrid as we know it today was actually developed with the help of Gary McCord, the TV announcer and former PGA pro. He saw his golf buddies back home struggling with their long irons, so he thought maybe something could be done to make them easier to hit. He went to his sponsor, TaylorMade and suggested they come up with something new.

The result was the TaylorMade Rescue Club. The first of a new breed. So what the heck did they do to make this new club?

Well, it’s called a “hybrid” because it a combination of a wood and an iron. They basically took an iron shaft and and put a new kind of head on it. That head would have features of a wood. Features like a wide sole, low-back center of gravity, and more mass. So what’s so different about that? Why not just get a 5 or 7 wood.

The big difference is that shaft. The loft of a 2 iron and a 5 wood may be about the same…but the shafts are way different.

The shaft length on a 2 iron for an average height player is about 39 inches. The length on a 5 wood is about 42 inches. Hybrids are somewhere in between. A longer club will always go farther because a longer club will produce more clubhead speed. That extra speed will also tend to make the ball go higher. The problem with that extra speed is it can make the club harder to control.

Iron shafts are also thicker than wood shafts. I bet you didn’t realize that. Not a lot (.03 inches), but enough to make the shaft more stable which adds up to a bit more accuracy.

Starting to get confused? Well here’s the bottom line.

Compared to a comparably lofted wood, a hybrid club is:
- more accurate
- won’t go quite as far
- easier to hit because it’s shorter

Compared to the same long iron, a hybrid is:
- easier to hit because the head has more mass and a lower center of gravity
- will make the ball go higher, carry further and land softer
- better out of sand and bad lies

Hopefully that clears up any confusion.

So which ones to buy?

Today’s hybrid clubs are actually quite varied. In addition to a choice of lofts, you can also get different sole widths and face heights. You can get lengths that are longer than standard irons and shorter or just as long as woods. In short, some hybrids offered are more like fairway woods and some are more like irons. Just remember the basic rules of club design…the lower and farther back the center of gravity, the higher the ball will tend to fly. The longer the shaft the farther the ball will go but that extra length may make it harder to control. Remember to make your selection based on what your game needs not the manufacturers hype.

Golf Carts — An Amazingly Diversified Niche Industry

Golfers out for a Sunday afternoon game just take them for granted on the golf course, and never think about their origin. I am talking about golf carts, those miniature vehicles dotting each golf course. Even so, golf cart production is a multi-million dollar industry and different systems abound. Golf carts are manufactured as miniature cars, and golf-cart corporations provide leasing and financing choices just as the huge car corporations do.

Golf originates from a medieval game played on the coast of Scotland in the 15th century. Golfers would hit a pebble instead of a manufactured ball around the sand dunes employing a stick or wide club. As time passed, stones were exchanged for man-made balls, the earliest of which were thin leather bags stuffed with feathers. The gutta-percha ball wasn’t invented until 1848 and might be hit the maximum distance of 225 yards. In 1899 rubber balls were invented that may reach distances of 430 yards if hit by a professional. Golf world kicks off American Express Women’s Golf Month
This month, golf courses across the country will participate in the 2009 American Express Women’s Golf Month, offering women free golf instruction and a variety of other activities – from receptions and seminars, to club fittings and equipment demonstrations. PGA/LPGA Professional Suzy Whaley, LPGA Tour and World Golf Halls of Fame member Nancy Lopez, and fitness expert and philanthropist Donna Richardson Joyner serve as spokeswomen.

“Programs such as American Express Women’s Golf Month, provide the opportunity to experience the game of golf in a comfortable setting, under the guidance of skilled PGA/LPGA Professionals,” said Anne Lyndrup, director of player development for the National Golf Course Owners Association and leader of the Women’s Golf Month organizers. “We look forward to celebrating the game of golf with thousands of people across the country during our fifth anniversary.”

Along with complimentary golf instruction for women 14 and older, participating host facilities plan events such as networking receptions, golf rules and etiquette seminars, club fitting, equipment demonstrations, golf apparel fashion shows, luncheons and contests. Complimentary use of golf clubs will be available at all locations. GCSAA members are encouraged to host open house events and course tours to share information about golf courses and the environment.

American Express Women’s Golf Month is part of the national Play Golf America campaign. It is coordinated by industry-leading organizations, including GCSAA, Executive Women’s Golf Association, Ladies Professional Golf Association, National Golf Course Owners Association and The PGA of America. In its first four years, more than 105,000 people nationwide have been introduced or re-introduced to the game of golf during Women’s Golf Month, which premiered in 2005 as Women’s Golf Week.
